Appleseed released a statement in response to the announcement of changes to Gifted and Talented programs. In addition to being a tragic reversal of the steps made by the previous administration towards providing enrichment and accelerated learning opportunities to all of NYC’s public school students, it is also egregious that NYC’s School Chancellor Banks and Mayor Adams believe that expanding a program that segregates students will bring an end to an era of scarcity. In truth, all this does is exacerbate scarcity and sustain the appalling practice of separating and segregating our youngest students.
