On November 21st, New York Appleseed’s executive director, Nyah Berg, testified before the NYC Council Committee on Education and Committee on Oversight and Investigations concerning school bus transportation in NYC schools. In her statement, which can be read in full here, she shared pertinent findings from our School Bus Memo, that was published earlier this year – specifically around the number of school bus breakdowns and delays, the lack of much-needed ridership data, and the need for the DOE to update their school bus regulations. Years of harmful ambivalence has resulted in unmet needs of students and families, particularly those from marginalized groups, and this failure to provide dependable transportation has left them shouldering the heaviest part of this burden.
