As Mayor de Blasio continues to remain silent on the decision to change admissions for the 2021-2022 school year, students and their families have had to deal with the unnecessary added stress of worrying about how this decision may impact their chances of attending a public middle school. Instead of waiting for an answer from the mayor, principals can sign on to this pledge that states they will not rank students or otherwise participate in screening students for admission. These practices place stress on families during a public health crisis and exacerbate segregation and inequities in NYC schools by excluding students from our most marginalized communities. Supporters of this movement can also sign on in solidarity by putting (unscreened) next to their school name.
