11.17.25 at 9:30 AM– Today, New York Appleseed releases Priorities for Integration: First 100 Days, a blueprint outlining ten clear, actionable, and feasible steps the incoming Mamdani administration can take within its first three months to address school segregation across New York City.
Developed in partnership with members of the Integration Coalition, and supported by nearly 20 organizations and several parent leaders, the blueprint calls for intentional and accountable leadership within NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) to fulfill long-standing promises for progress on integrating schools. It emphasizes the need to reinvest in forgotten goals, policies and local laws that would further New York City’s school system into one that is truly integrated, equitable, and inclusive.
The tools, resources, and research proving that integration in New York City is both feasible and essential have long existed. What is required now is coordinated leadership and sustained investment from the City and NYCPS to drive implementation and scale the proven successes of several community-driven efforts across the system.
“This is a moment of opportunity,” said Nyah Berg, Executive Director of New York Appleseed. “For too long, the tools for progress on creating integrated and inclusive schools have sat on the shelf while too many students continue to sit in segregated schools and classrooms paying the price. This blueprint is a call to action and a reminder that we already know what works, and now we need the courage and commitment from City leadership to begin to make it happen.”
This briefing represents a starting point, not an end goal. New York Appleseed, and the many advocates, families, and organizations standing behind this effort, look forward to working in partnership with the Mamdani administration to turn these recommendations into tangible progress for New York City’s students.
