Road to Better Busing Coalition

This initiative brings together education justice organizations, transportation equity advocates, and disability rights parent leaders to demand safe, reliable, and equitable yellow bus service for New York City students, especially those with disabilities, in foster care, or in temporary housing. With outdated contracts, mounting delays, and limited access to after-school and weekend programming, the current system is failing our most vulnerable students. The coalition advocates for legislative and policy change, including the passage of S.1018, to modernize school transportation and ensure every student can get to school—and opportunity—on time.

The Integration
Coalition

A coalition of nonprofit organizations uniting to further educational equity and the 5 Rs of Real Integration for NYC public schools. The coalition’s actions are guided by two main priorities:

Advocating for Real Integration and Desegregation
As a coalition, we call for policies that take immediate action to desegregate our schools in tandem with the implementation of policies and practices that integrate our schools.

Calling for Solidarity, not Scarcity
As a coalition, we call for solidarity as a means to combat the harmful policies and practices that accompany a scarcity mindset. We define a scarcity mindset as perpetuating the falsehood that there are not enough opportunities for everyone in the school system, therefore, students and families must fight each other for them. We define solidarity as a remedy to the perpetuation of the scarcity mindset. To combat harmful competition and exclusivity, we must come together around the reality that there is no reason to fight over exclusive access to a few segregated seats when we can instead fight for an inclusive system for all.

Policy Advocacy

Policy Advocacy at New York Appleseed is where vision meets action—linking classrooms, bus routes, and city blocks in one push for true equity. Through the Integrated Schools Project, the Integration Coalition, the Road to Better Busing Coalition, and our Integrated Communities work, we dismantle the policies that segregate students, deny reliable transportation, and concentrate opportunity in a few zip codes. By pairing grassroots voices with legal research and legislative strategy, we champion bold, evidence-based reforms so every child can learn, travel, and thrive in a city that is as integrated and inclusive as its ideals.

Integrated Schools Project

Our flagship program aims to dismantle the systems and structures that perpetuate segregation in New York City’s public schools. By raising community awareness, building connections between policymakers and grassroots organizers, amplifying student voices, and collaborating with dedicated pro bono researchers, New York Appleseed advocates for policies and programming that further truly equitable, inclusive, and integrated schools.
