Schools are the beating hearts of our communities
New York Appleseed is a nonprofit organization that advocates for integrated schools and communities across New York City and State.
Our mission supports a holistic approach to remedying segregation with a framework initially developed by students called the 5 Rs of Real Integration.
01

Achieve Racial, ethnic, linguistic and economic diversity in composition
02

Appoint leadership Representative of this diversity
03

Facilitate Relationships across people of different backgrounds
04

Practice Restorative justice
05

Share equitable access to Resources and opportunities
Our vision is for all New York schools and communities to experience the documented benefits of integration—and to ensure every student and neighbor has the support needed to thrive in a multiracial, multicultural democracy
Our Campaigns & Programs
Policy Advocacy
NY Appleseed believes meaningful change happens when communities and policymakers work together. That’s why our policy advocacy focuses on bridging grassroots organizing and institutional partnerships—making sure students, families, and educators have the tools and expertise they need to be heard and shape the policies that affect them most
Community Outreach & Engagement
We center the voices of those most impacted by injustice in shaping the solutions. Through community outreach and engagement, we partner with students, families, and educators—especially those from historically marginalized communities—to ensure they are heard, supported, and equipped to further Real Integration in their schools and neighborhoods.
Research
We develop and share research that strengthens the effectiveness, adaptability, and feasibility of our policy platforms—ensuring our advocacy is grounded in evidence and responsive to ever-changing community needs.
